Twenty Searches Worth A Year Of Work

Cambridge has industrial buyers whose entire search behaviour is a handful of very specific phrases. Volume is the wrong number to judge them on.

The ratio nobody adjusts for

In Cambridge The Valuable Searches Are The Small Ones

This is a manufacturing city. Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada has built vehicles here since 1988, and the supplier base around that kind of plant searches very differently from a consumer.

Almost every rule of thumb in local search assumes high volume and low value per visit. Rank for a term with a thousand searches, convert two percent, make a few hundred dollars a time. That logic is why volume is the first number in every proposal and why anything under fifty searches a month gets dismissed.

An industrial supplier in Cambridge is in the opposite business. The phrase describing exactly what they make might carry ten or twenty searches a month, and one of those searches can be a buyer at a plant looking for a second source on a part they use by the thousand. The contract behind it can be worth more than a year of consumer work.

So seo cambridge work for a business like that is a completely different exercise. You are not trying to win traffic. You are trying to be findable by a very small number of people who already know exactly what they need, and who will type something a consumer never would.

Two different jobs

The Same City, Two Opposite Briefs

Cambridge has both kinds of business, and the work for each looks almost nothing like the other. The first question is which one you are.

Plenty of Cambridge businesses are squarely in the first column and, like most Ontario towns, should be treated that way: trades, clinics, restaurants, retail. For them the usual advice is correct and the Google Business Profile is most of the job.

The mistake is applying that column to a company selling tooling, components, machining, coatings or contract assembly. Those businesses get sold a blog and a review campaign, neither of which reaches a procurement engineer. Cambridge seo services quoted on volume are quoting against a number that does not describe the opportunity.

What usually goes wrong

A proposal built on the broad city terms, a monthly blog, and a report full of impressions. It is a perfectly competent consumer campaign sold to a company whose buyers are three engineers at two plants. Cambridge seo work judged on traffic will look successful the whole time it fails.

What we do instead

Find the terminology the buyer actually uses, which is usually a process name, a material, a tolerance or a standard rather than anything a marketer would write. Build one honest page per capability around it. Then measure enquiries, not sessions.

The local half

Galt, Preston And Hespeler Are Still Where People Think They Are

For the consumer-facing half of the city there is a second thing worth knowing: Cambridge was formed in 1973 out of three separate towns, and people still use their names.

HOW PEOPLE DESCRIBE WHERE THEY AREBy the old town: Galt, Preston, Hespeleramalgamated in 1973, and still how residents give directionsBy the region: Waterloo Region, the tri-cityhow a buyer from Kitchener or Waterloo frames the same searchBy the city: Cambridgethe only one most websites here are built forBy the highway: off the 401how an industrial buyer thinks about a supplier’s locationFour framings, one city. Most sites here answer to exactly one of them.
Each framing is a different set of searches, and three of them are usually unclaimed.

Say the old names where they fit

A business in Hespeler that only ever says Cambridge is harder to find for somebody who thinks of themselves as being in Hespeler. This is free to fix and it is the most common gap we see in cambridge seo services already being paid for.

Claim the regional framing too

Buyers in Kitchener and Waterloo search across the region rather than by municipality. If you genuinely serve them, say so plainly. If you do not, do not pretend, because the enquiries waste everybody’s time.

For suppliers, say the highway

Proximity to the 401 is a real procurement consideration and almost no supplier site mentions it. It costs one sentence and it answers a question the buyer was going to ask anyway.

How it goes

The First Ninety Days

Four stages. The first one decides which of the two briefs you are on.

Week one

Consumer, supplier, or both

What one new customer is worth and how many of them exist. A business where a single enquiry can be worth six figures is on a completely different plan from one selling two hundred dollar jobs, and running the wrong plan is the most expensive mistake available in this city.

Weeks one and two

What the buyer types, not what you call it

For consumer work that is the city and the service. For supply work it is a process, a material, a tolerance or a standard, and it usually comes out of a conversation with whoever answers technical questions rather than out of a keyword tool.

Weeks two to six

Capability pages, written honestly

A real page for each thing you actually do, with the detail a buyer needs to shortlist you. Most supplier sites have one page called Services listing eleven capabilities, which ranks for none of them and answers none of the questions.

Ongoing

Enquiries, not sessions

For a supplier, four qualified enquiries a year can be an outstanding result and a traffic report will call it a failure. We agree what success looks like before anything is built, because otherwise the reporting argues with the strategy every month.

Questions

SEO In Cambridge: Common Questions

Our keywords only get ten searches a month. Is SEO worth it?

Frequently yes, and in Cambridge more often than almost anywhere. The question is not how many people search but what one of them is worth. A supplier whose phrase carries ten searches a month, two of which are buyers looking for a second source on a part they use in volume, has an enormous opportunity that a volume-led proposal would dismiss outright. The work also tends to be cheaper, because almost nobody is competing for those phrases. What you cannot do is judge it on traffic afterwards.

How is industrial SEO different from local SEO?

Local SEO is mostly about the Google Business Profile, reviews and proximity, because a consumer is choosing between nearby options. Industrial search is about being findable by somebody who already knows the terminology and is looking for a capability, often from another city or another country. That means the detail on your pages does the work rather than your profile: processes, materials, tolerances, certifications, the equipment you run. The two jobs barely overlap, and a business that needs the second is poorly served by a proposal built for the first.

Should our pages mention Galt, Preston or Hespeler?

If you serve customers who describe themselves that way, yes. Cambridge was created in 1973 from three separate towns and residents still use the old names in conversation and in search. A business in one of them that only ever says Cambridge is harder to find for the people closest to it. This is free to do and it is one of the most consistent gaps we find. For an industrial supplier it matters far less than the 401, which is the location detail a procurement buyer actually cares about.

We already rank for our company name. Is that enough?

It is the minimum rather than the goal. Ranking for your own name means people who already know you can find you, which is necessary and is not growth. The question worth asking is whether you rank for what you do, in the words somebody who has never heard of you would use. For a lot of Cambridge suppliers the honest answer is no, because the site describes the company rather than the capability, and the capability is what gets searched.

How long does it take?

For the low-competition supplier phrases, often faster than people expect, because so few competitors have built anything for them. Two to four months is normal for pages to settle. For the broad consumer terms in the city it is slower and the profile work matters more. We would rather tell you which of those you are in at the start, since the timelines differ enough that the wrong expectation makes a successful project feel like a failing one.
